Hospitalist Wins 13th APEX Award for Excellence

The June 2025 issue of The Hospitalist has earned an APEX Award of Excellence, marking the publication’s fourth straight win and its 13th overall since launching in 1997.

Recognition highlights editorial depth and design quality

The Society of Hospital Medicine and its publishing partner Wiley announced the award Thursday, noting that the issue was one of ten magazines honored for the Writing subcategory. The APEX Awards of Excellence evaluate submissions on graphic design, editorial content, and overall communication impact.

Out of roughly 1,000 entries across 13 major categories, judges awarded 100 Grand Awards and 400 Awards of Excellence for outstanding work in 100 subcategories. The magazine secured its place among the latter, reflecting consistent performance in a competitive field.

Content focus spans diversity, education and practice challenges

The honored issue featured a range of topics aimed at hospital medicine professionals. Articles addressed health care for LGBTQIA+ individuals, the challenges faced by teaching residents, and strategies for hospitalists negotiating contracts. Additional pieces explained what hospitalists need to know about ICE visits, methods for managing medical errors, and other practical concerns.

“This recognition reflects The Hospitalist’s longstanding role as a trusted source of information for hospital medicine professionals dealing with increasingly complex care environments,” said Dr. Eric E. Howell, CEO of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “The publication—and SHM as a whole—remain committed to advancing the field and providing members with the insights they need to deliver exceptional care.”

Physician editor Weijen Chang, MD, FAAP, SFHM, said the award highlighted the teamwork between Wiley and SHM editors. “This fourth consecutive APEX award reflects steady excellence and collaboration among the editorial board,” he added, emphasizing the role of SHM members in driving improvements for patient care.

Since its first issue in 1997, the journal has accumulated 13 APEX Awards, with the latest adding to a streak that began four years ago. The consistency suggests an ongoing commitment to both visual and textual standards required by the awards program.

Such accolades show how niche professional journals can influence practice standards. When a specialty magazine repeatedly earns recognition for clear, well‑designed content, it helps set expectations for how information should be presented to busy clinicians.

The focus on LGBTQIA+ health reflects a growing awareness of inclusive care within hospital settings. By dedicating space to these subjects, the publication not only informs its readers but also reinforces the importance of culturally competent practices, a trend gaining traction across many medical specialties.

Future issues will aim to maintain the editorial standards that earned the APEX accolade.
