The link stems from Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium commonly found in gum disease that has been detected in arterial plaques and Alzheimer’s brain tissue.

Longevity physician Jennifer Timmons, MD, notes that this bacterium is present in atherosclerotic plaque, which can obstruct arteries during a heart attack. Although the connections are not definitive, the evidence is strong enough that medical professionals caution against dismissing oral health as a minor factor in systemic inflammation. The bacteria’s ability to spread beyond the mouth shows the importance of disrupting its growth through flossing.

Dr. Hoss advises using traditional string floss for its ability to reach deep gum pockets, though alternatives like picks or water flossers offer some benefit. As for the right way to floss? “Curve it into a ‘C’ shape around each tooth and use an up-and-down motion,” he shares.

Beyond fresher breath, flossing is one of the few daily habits with proven ties to longevity, costing almost nothing and taking less than two minutes. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., while dementia significantly impacts both quality and length of life. While flossing cannot reverse existing damage, it may help prevent some of it by controlling bacterial spread before inflammation takes hold. Dr. Nejat says, “While flossing alone is not a cure-all for heart or brain health, it is one of the easiest daily habits that can support both oral and overall health.”
