A vegan diet may influence the body at a molecular level. Investigators found that four weeks of plant-based eating can alter chemical markers on DNA, potentially impacting inflammation, metabolism, and cellular repair processes.

The clinical trial tracked 48 healthy adults who first consumed a standardized diet for one week. Participants were then randomly assigned to either a vegan or a meat-rich regimen for one month. To ensure results reflected food composition rather than weight loss, the study provided similar caloric intake for both groups. Scientists analyzed blood samples from more than 800,000 DNA methylation sites before and after the intervention to observe how these signals regulate gene activity.

The data revealed that the plant-based group experienced shifts in pathways related to immune function and cell growth. Specifically, the analysis pointed toward a less inflammatory profile, including lower levels of neutrophils and higher proportions of CD4 T cells. While such findings are consistent with established research on how , it remains unclear if these short-term adjustments provide long-term protection against chronic illness or merely reflect temporary biological fluctuations.

The team also utilized epigenetic clocks, which are mathematical models used to estimate biological age based on methylation patterns. Two of the three models suggested that biological age slowed among participants following the vegan protocol. However, a third clock focused on chronological age showed no change. This indicates that while the diet impacts specific biological pathways, it does not necessarily reverse the aging process entirely.

Jerome Mertens, an associate professor of neuroscience at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and co-senior author of the paper, noted that the results highlight how quickly the body responds to dietary changes. He stated that human genes are not a fixed destiny. The findings demonstrate that the epigenome is responsive to daily choices in a way that is faster than previously assumed.

The results remain preliminary.

Despite these observations, the study does not serve as evidence that a vegan diet prevents cancer or guarantees improved health outcomes. The trial was small, restricted to healthy volunteers, and spanned only one month. Because the observed methylation changes were modest and scattered across thousands of sites, the clinical significance remains uncertain. Future research must determine if these molecular markers persist over time and whether they correlate with reduced disease risk. For now, the study offers a glimpse of how quickly diet can affect biology beneath the surface.
