Nitrogen dioxide, a common pollutant from vehicle exhaust, stood out. Short-term exposure increased hospital visits by 41% compared to days with lower levels. UV radiation also played a role, people exposed to high sunlight levels were 23% more likely to seek care for migraines. The study noted that extreme heat and low humidity amplified these effects, likely because they intensified the body’s reaction to pollutants.
While the research didn’t prove causation, doctors say the links make biological sense. Air pollution may trigger neuroinflammation, releasing pain chemicals like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) that contribute to migraines. Heat and humidity further complicate the issue: raised temperatures can irritate blood vessels and nerves, while dehydration, common in hot, dry conditions, disrupts circulation, potentially sparking headaches.
High humidity, often overlooked, also poses risks. It increases sweating and fluid loss, reducing blood vessel diameter and straining the body’s ability to regulate pressure. Even minor atmospheric changes can activate nerve endings, releasing more pain signals. The study’s timing, amid worsening heat waves and pollution, suggests these triggers will become more prevalent, not less.
For now, the focus remains on mitigation. Doctors recommend tracking pollution levels and staying indoors during peak exposure, using air purifiers when necessary. Hydration, they emphasize, is critical, especially with electrolytes, to counteract the effects of heat and humidity. But the bigger challenge may lie in avoiding triggers that are harder to control.
